When Mr. Payson asked me a year ago to write a book on Dolls, I did not realize that so hard a task lay before me. As my studies progressed, I soon discovered that I should have to work out a problem as well as to produce a book. I found very little material at hand, and, consequently, my researches had to be made in bypaths of history.
