This book is a compilation of contemporary source material for dating 19th century dolls. Prior to the 19th century only meagre contemporary records of dolls exist; there are pictures of children playing with dolls, records of Court fashion dolls and descriptions of unusual mechanical dolls.
Alice Early in ENGLISH DOLLS, EFFIGIES AND PUPPETS p. 90 tells us of a London turner who in 1733 made wooden "babies" (dolls) turned on a lathe.
